The Help - A Review and Giveaway
I don't often watch movies that don't include men in coloured skivvies or animation, so when I was asked if I'd like to review The Help recently I was very pleased to say yes. I'd heard really good things about it but wasn't really sure what to expect.
It took nearly four hours to watch. Not because the movie is all that long but because my life is like that with interruptions galore. That fact that I stayed up way too late to finish it speaks to how engaging the film is though, I could not bear the thought of going to bed without seeing it all.
The Help is set during a time of great upheaval in American history... the 1960's in the South. But rather than focus on the basic historical context, this movie explores it through the compassion of one young woman and the stories of those working as maids in a society that still considered people of colour very much inferior.
I'm not going to go into the plot too much here because I think you need to watch it yourself. I intend to read the book as well because I really want to know more about this story. It was powerful and moving, with amazing performances from the predominantly female cast. I spent a fair portion of the movie absolutely fuming at the ignorance and injustice of one character in particular, and fully immersed in the storyline.
The Help has just been released on DVD and Blu-Ray and is well worth adding to your collection.
I'm happy to be able to help one of you in that aim, as I have a copy of The Help on DVD to give away too.

I received a copy of The Help for the purpose of this review. No payment was offered or accepted and all opinions are my own. I'm looking forward to watching it again all in one sitting!
